(NASB) Psalm 51:1 “BE GRACIOUS to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness;
According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.”

A prayer recognizing the need of God’s forgiveness, His graciousness, His loving-kindness and His compassion to blot out (erase) our transgressions (1. The violation of a law, command, or duty.  2. The exceeding of due bounds or limits.)

What must we do to be forgiven by God?
The Psalmist went to the LORD God in prayer, seeking His forgiveness because of his very real sins.  And isn’t that what you and I are to do also?  To ask for God’s forgiveness, knowing we have sinned against Him?

It is God’s way of forgiveness which I need to accept and submit to in order to be in right standing before Him.
I do not, I cannot, begin to imagine what it would take to appease God when I sin against Him if I depend on my own power and my way to appease Him.
Other religions offer various kinds of sacrifices (living and otherwise), rote prayers, penances, etc. to appease their gods.

What does the God of the Bible require?
(NASB) Colossians 2:6 “Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.
(NASB) Colossians 2:13-14 “When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,
14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”

My friend, it is imperative to receive Christ as Savior and Lord for it is only through Him we can be saved from our transgressions.  This is why the crucifixion of Christ is so very important to God and should be to us.
Christ Jesus not only died with your sins and mine as if they were His, He triumphantly rose from the dead.  He conquered death, sin and Satan for us when He died and was resurrected.  He lives today seated at the right hand of God the Father.

Yes, we need the Prayer of Repentance for God to forgive us,

through Jesus Christ.
