1 Jesus was arrested in the darkness of the early morning hours. Then He was taken to a house to be ‘tried’ by Annas (the former high priest and father-in-law to Caiaphas). While there Jesus was mocked and beaten. The illegal trial was held before daybreak. (See John 18:12-13)

2 Then He was taken to the house of the ruling high priest, Caiaphas. The hastily called leaders came quickly and gathered to prepare 2-3 witnesses to testify against Jesus. These witnesses perjured their testimony; they could not get their stories straight to testify against Jesus…false evidence couldn’t even be in agreement for the death penalty. (See Matthew 26:59)

When Jesus finally broke His silence it was to declare that He was the Messiah, the Christ, the Son of God.
The high priest tore his clothing (this also was illegal – see (NASB) Leviticus 21:10 “The priest who is the highest among his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil has been poured and who has been consecrated to wear the garments, shall not uncover his head nor tear his clothes”
Jesus had to die…death was the only sentence the Jewish leaders wanted and they couldn’t legally declare the death penalty…only the Roman governor could give this sentence. So Jesus was taken to Pilate.

3 Pilate found no guilt in Jesus on the false Jewish charges.

4 Pilate had Jesus sent to Herod the king, since Jesus was from Galilee in the jurisdiction of Herod. (See Luke 23:6-7)
Herod wanted a ‘magic’ act to be performed by Jesus…and Jesus was silent. Here too, Jesus was mocked and treated with contempt by Herod’s soldiers.
Four trials and no death penalty stated…yet.

5 Jesus was sent back to Pilate and the Jewish leaders brought pressure against Pilate to crucify Him. Pilate had a perilous political problem…he did not want to have a riot started during the holy days of Passover…thousands of Jews from all over the known world had gathered to celebrate this Festival in Jerusalem.
Pilate had Jesus scourged (See John 19:1) then he capitulated to the pressure of the crowd which had gathered, demanding Jesus to be crucified.

Was Jesus a victim? No! Jesus was in the will of His Father. The plan of God had been for this hour in history…
Five trials culminated in the death penalty for the sinless Son of Man/Son of God to die on a cross. Why? Why would a loving Father do this by permitting this travesty of justice? (Neither Roman nor Jewish law was handled fairly.)

(Amplified) 1 Peter 2:24 “He personally bore our sins in His [own] body on the tree [as on an altar and offered Himself on it], that we might die (cease to exist) to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.”

It was for you!
