(NASB) Luke 22:14 “When the hour had come…”

Throughout Jesus’ ministry He had said, “My hour has not yet come.”  (See John 2:4-6; 7:6, 8, 30; 8:20)  And now “the hour had come”…the hour had come for Jesus to be the perfect sacrifice Who would be acceptable to God for your sins and mine.  The “hour had come” when Jesus established a new covenant in His blood.

(NASB) Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”)

Jesus was sitting with His disciples during the Last Supper.  During this special time Jesus’ actions and words revealed the importance and depth of meaning of His coming sacrifice:
(NASB) Luke 22:19-20 “And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’
20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.”

Bread and wine or grape juice (the fruit of the vine) is an important part of Communion.

(NASB) 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 “…the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’
25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.’
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”

[If you participate in Communion, do you take it lightly as a religious exercise?  Or do you enter into this solemn time with grave reflection and self-examination?]

27 “Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.
28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.”
