(NASB) Isaiah 53:7 “He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not open His mouth;
Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.”

As you re-read the above verse, notice that Isaiah spoke as if this had already happened.

Messiah – Jesus Christ fulfilled this prophecy.  Consider the following scenes on the night of His betrayal by Judas Iscariot.

(NASB) Matthew 26:50 “And Jesus said to him, ‘Friend, do what you have come for.’  Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.”

Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane without physical resistance.

At His trial before Caiaphas, the high priest, Jesus remained silent as false testimonies were heard.  Only when Caiaphas called on Him to swear by the living God did He speak, affirming His identity as Christ, the Son of God.
(See Matthew 26:62-68)

In Matthew 27:11-14, Jesus was on trial before the Roman governor, Pilate.  Jesus said nothing in His own defense…He was silent until He acknowledged that He was the King of the Jews in answer to Pilate’s question.

As the scourging of Jesus took place (Matthew 27:26), as Jesus was mocked by the soldiers (Matthew 27:27-31), as Jesus was nailed to the cross (Matthew 27:35)…regarding His innocence, He was silent.

Even in silence Jesus the Christ fulfilled Scripture.

(NASB) 1 Peter 2:22-23 “WHO COMMTTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH;
23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered
no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously…”

When your faith in Christ is causing you to suffer, how do you respond?  Do you revile your tormentors?  Do you shout out threats at those who are persecuting you?  What was Jesus’ example to you and me?

(NASB) 1 Peter 2:21 “For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps.”
