(NASB) Isaiah 53:5 “But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.”

“pierced through”
Jesus had died on the cross; the two men who were crucified on each side of Him had not yet died:
(NASB) John 19:32-33 “So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first  man and of the other who was crucified with Him;
33 but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear…”

crushed”
(NASB) John 19:30 “Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished!’  And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”
(Jesus was not defeated when He died on the cross…His work was finished and He had triumphed by dying for our sins.)

“chastening”
Through the ‘chastening’ of our Lord Jesus Christ – He has become our source of salvation.
(NASB) Hebrews 5:8-9 “Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.
9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation.”

“scourging”
(NASB) Mark 15:15 “Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.”
(See Matthew 27:26 also)

The actions Isaiah described were accomplished through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ…for you.  He has taken your sins as if they were His own.

How have you responded to such a great salvation?
