Jesus prayed for His disciples on the way to the Garden of Gethsemane. One part of that prayer is:

(NASB) John 17:6 “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.”

Jesus had shown His disciples God the Father. His disciples were chosen by the Father and given to His Son, Jesus Christ.

What proof did Jesus give that His disciples were from God? They kept God”™s word! They were obedient to what God said.

What was true then is true today: the proof of being a child of God is our obedience to His word.

How does anyone become a child of God?

(NASB) John 1:12-13 “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,

13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”

Think about that! To receive Jesus, to believe in His name, gives you and me the right to become a child of God!

To receive Jesus as their Savior is to believe that He died for their sins and came to life after dying, it is to believe that He is the Son of God. This is what children of God believe: This is how anyone is born into the family of God. It is not through being a member of a church, it is not being baptized without your input, it is through a personal belief and confession that Jesus is Lord and that God raised Him from the dead.

Being a child of God is to obey His word and His word states:

(NIV) Romans 10:9-10 “That if you confess with your mouth, “˜Jesus is Lord,”™ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10for it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.”

What proof is there of you being a child of God?
