It is for your own good”¦
How many times do children hear that statement”¦and hate it!!! Yet, Jesus said something like that to eleven grown men. It was on the way to the Garden of Gethsemane on the night He would be betrayed by Judas Iscariot.
(NASB) John 16:5-7 “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, “˜Where are You going?”™
6 “˜But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
7 “˜But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.”
When great sorrow and grieving grips us, it is difficult and at times impossible to take in what others are saying. Jesus understands.
It was for the disciples”™ own good that He was leaving them. After His crucifixion He would rise from the dead and then fifty days later He would ascend into heaven.
We have an advantage that the disciples did not have”¦we are looking back to that time and they were living in that time.
Jesus promised to send them the Helper, also referred to as the Counselor, to live within them. Jesus had been with them, the Helper would be living within them.
When you receive Jesus as your Savior and Lord you are given this same Helper, God the Holy Spirit.
Christ said it was for His followers”™ own good that He would go away into heaven, for He would send His Holy Spirit to all who have been “˜born again”™ into the family of God.
It is for your own good”¦
that Jesus died, rose from the grave of death and ascended into heaven”¦
for He sends the Helper to all who are committed in following Him.
