Messiah”¦Proclaimed by Crowds
The Red Carpet is rolled out for heads of state, for kings and important people of royalty. These people have power, prestige and position. As these important personages walk down that carpet of distinction”¦people are lined up along the sides wanting to touch, shake hands, and to make eye contact with the honored one(s).
Crowds of people surrounded Jesus as He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey”™s foal. These Jewish crowds were from many nations, coming to Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Passover in the spring of the year.
(NASB) Matthew 21:8-9 “Most of the crowd spread their coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road.
9 The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting,
“˜Hosanna to the Son of David;
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord;
Hosanna in the highest!”™
As an act of homage to Jesus, coats and palm branches were laid down for Jesus to ride into Jerusalem on the donkey”™s foal. He was recognized as an important personage.
Jesus was recognized as the descendant of Israel”™s greatest king”¦David. Messiah was to come through the lineage of King David.
Jesus was being blessed and acclaimed and heaven is referenced “˜in the highest!”™ Jesus was being given the highest praise!
Jesus was being given adulation by these people who hoped He would take the place of Herod and overthrow Rome”™s rule.
(NASB) Matthew 21:10-11 “When He had entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, “˜Who is this?”™
11 And the crowds were saying, “˜This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee.”™”
