A Teachable Heart Attitude”¦Begins with Prayer
As Jesus prayed alone on the night He was betrayed, the night before He would suffer and be crucified the next day”¦He prayed, knowing the coming events.
(NASB) Matthew 26:39, 42
Verse 39 “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.”
Verse 42 “My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done.”
Jesus”™ prayer was to His Father and He was in agreement with His Father”™s will for Him. This is true prayer.
(See Matthew 5:1-2) Earlier in Jesus”™ ministry, He saw the crowds. He climbed a mountain in Galilee, sat down and began to teach those who had followed Him. People came to Jesus to be taught”¦how do you go to Jesus to be taught by Him?
Do you go to church, to Sunday School, to a Bible study, to your own time of reading God”™s word:
Ø Do you go to listen with your heart as well as your mind?
Ø Do you go to be changed in some area of your life?
Ø What are the results of your attendance where God”™s word is given out?
Ø Motives, attitudes, actions and words should be affected by God”™s own word. Are yours affected?
A teachable attitude should be one of expectation ““ expect God to give you knowledge, expect God”™s word to counsel you, expect God to keep His words of promise and even of warning. God says:
(NASB) Psalm 32:8-9 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go;
I will counsel you with My eye upon you.
9 Do not be as the horse or as the mule which have no understanding,
Whose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check,
Otherwise they will not come near to you.”
What are some of the ramifications if you and I talk with God (prayer) and yet insist on our will, our way?
When you and I pray in that way, we are not listening to God”¦we are not yielding to God and we sound like”¦Satan before he fell from heaven.
(NASB) Isaiah 14:13-14 “I will”¦”
Jesus taught His followers to pray (NASB) Matthew 6:10)
“Your kingdom come, Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.”
For prayer to be meaningful between God and us:
We need to come to Him with a teachable heart attitude.
We need to be in agreement with Him and His words.
