Jesus Condemned Hypocrisy
It is amazing how many times Jesus spoke against hypocrites. Hypocrites are people who pretend to be someone on the outside and are 180 degrees different on the inside.
They pretend they have certain beliefs, feelings, or virtues which they do not possess; they are insincere and false, wearing a mask. Actors on stage or in the movies are playing a part”¦that is their job.
Our job as followers of Christ is not to “˜play a part”™; we are to be”¦followers of Christ. What mask are you and I hiding behind to not expose our true feelings or beliefs?
In what area of our lives are we insincere?
What are some of the ways you or I play a part to fool people into thinking we are “˜religious”™ or “˜pious”™?
In what area of your life do you need to become honest with yourself and with God and with others?
Hypocrisy is a sin. When you and I sin, it is against God”¦and He has provided a way for us to be forgiven”¦and we need to turn from hypocrisy.
(NASB) 1 John 1:9-10 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.”
In Matthew 23, Jesus condemns hypocrites over and over again. Hypocrisy is a serious issue with Jesus”¦where do you need to turn from “˜playing a part”™?
The motive of hypocrisy is to shield who we are.
As we “˜age”™, many times our protective shields”¦slip. Our masks fall away and the falseness and insincerity of our inner person begins to be revealed.
Jesus condemned hypocrisy as He gave His Sermon on the Mount. He condemned hypocritical giving, praying and fasting”¦because the hypocrites meant to be seen by other people for their generosity and piety.
(NIV) Micah 6:8 “He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
What is your prayer?
