Generosity is rewarded”¦generosity, many times, is publicized when large amounts of money are given to a favorite organization or cause. Donors to churches are often remembered publicly with a plaque or a brass plate.

What did Jesus say about doing good deeds or “˜acts of righteousness”™ which are highly publicized? Jesus warned about giving with the motive of being acclaimed.

(NASB) Matthew 6:1 “BEWARE OF practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.”

Why did Jesus call “˜show-boating”™ givers, hypocrites? Jesus pointed out headline seekers who seek attention”¦and called them hypocrites.

The intention to be seen, applauded, and looked up to for giving generous donations is a wrong motive. They have received their reward.

(NASB) Matthew 6:2 “So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.”

How are we to give to the needy? Jesus said to do it with quietness, without drawing attention to ourselves.

(NASB) Matthew 6:3 “But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,”

What did Jesus promise?

(NASB) Matthew 6:4 “so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”

The attitude and motive for doing an “˜act of righteousness”™

is judged by God.

when you give?
