The Distraction of Legalism
God has established boundaries in His creation and for people. Man comes along and establishes legalisms that are not of God.
(NASB) Luke 4:40 “While the sun was setting”¦”
In the traditions of the elders (in the Jewish faith) the Sabbath prohibitions started at sunset and ended at sunset. People were not to travel more than 2/3 of a mile or carry a burden on the Sabbath. God never gave these laws. He did establish a Sabbath rest ““ for people to be renewed.
I am legalistic, God is not. In desiring to do what God says, some set stringent limits where God does not. His limits are for people”™s best. His boundaries (and He has set boundaries) give room to move.
The people began to bring those needing healing “˜While the sun was setting”¦”™
(NASB) Luke 4:40 “all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him; and laying His hands on each one of them, He was healing them.”
Jesus is not limited, He is able to heal all illnesses. Notice that He tended to each person as an individual. He did not wave His hands and heal all of them at once. Individuals are of great worth in the sight of God ““ and He expends His time and energy to heal individuals.
Jesus heals people, one at a time. So we can know that when we go to Jesus He gives us His undivided attention. Jesus focuses on you and me (yet, He is so great, that He can do this for any number at one time!).
(NASB) Luke 4:41 “Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, “˜You are the Son of God!”™ But rebuking them, he would not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ.”
Demons demanded attention and determined to draw attention to Messiah as a deterrent to His ministry and His mission.
For this reason, Jesus rebuked the demons from shouting out His title and relationship to God.
What distracts you from believing in Jesus?
What distracts you from asking Jesus
for His healing and help?
