There is a children”™s book called, “Are You My Mother?” A duckling is searching for its mother and asks various farm animals, “˜Are you my mother?”™ The animals had no interest in this motherless duck. [By the way, the duck does find its mother on the very last page.]

The religious leaders in Jerusalem were very interested in finding out who this man was who was baptizing Jews in the Jordan River. They sent a delegation out to question him.

(NASB) John 1:19 “This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “˜Who are you?”™”

What was John”™s testimony? Notice that he never spoke of his resume and he could have. He never spoke of his calling from God and he could have. He never spoke of himself and he could have.

There is a time to speak of your resume and your accomplishments when you are seeking a job”¦but when Jesus is presented”¦do you point to Him?

“˜Who are you?”™

John”™s testimony was about who he was not.

(NASB) John 1:20-21 “And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “˜I am not the Christ.”™

21 They asked him, “˜What then? Are you Elijah?”™ And he said, “˜I am not.”™ “˜Are you the Prophet?”™ And he answered, “˜No.”™”

John never failed to declare who he was not ““ you may want to re-read the above verses again.

(NASB) John 1:22-23 “Then they said to him, “˜Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?

23 He said, “˜I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, “˜Make straight the way of the Lord,”™ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

John”™s answer was with the word of God”¦John”™s answer stated his mission, the job God had chosen for him.

You are encouraged to think about the answers to the following questions:

Who are you? Who are you in God”™s sight?

Who are you to your family? Who are you to others?

To Whom do you point when you worship?

Who are you?
