Historical records are of great importance for family, for nations and for Christians who follow Christ.

What did Luke do in the first five verses of Luke chapter 2? He provided concrete, historical records of the lineage of Jesus Christ through Mary and Joseph. Both were of the house and lineage of David. When Christ returns to this earth, He will come as King ““ His claim to the throne cannot be disputed.

(NASB) Luke 2:1-3 “NOW IN those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. 2 This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city.”

It is in the records, historically, that Rome”™s Caesar had decreed a census of all those under Roman rule. And this census was carried out in Israel. Each person had a specific city in which they were to register”¦the city where their ancestors had lived.

(NASB) Luke 2:4-5 “Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, 5 in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child.””

Historical records proved that Joseph and Mary were descended from David.

(See Luke 3:31 – Mary; Matthew 1:6, 16 ““ Joseph)

People who trace their lineage to the Mayflower take great pride in this fact. Lineage has nothing to do with what a person has done”¦lineage has everything to do with who one”™s ancestors were.

Your lineage is important; however, your relationship to the living God is imperative for life. On what do you base your life? On your ancestors and who they were or on Who Christ is to you? It is what Christ has done on the cross which gives deliverance from anything that keeps us from God.

Historical record: the child Mary was carrying was a descendant of King David.

What do the records of God show about you? Are you a child of God? Remember: He has no grandchildren! J

Jesus Christ is the King of all kings”¦the historical records of God are proof.

You and I are to base our attitudes and actions on these facts”¦Jesus is Who He claims to be.
