Having a Godly Marriage
Luke 1:59-60 “And it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zacharias, after his father.
60 But his mother answered and said, “˜no indeed; but he shall be called John.”™”
God had given definite instructions to Elizabeth from her husband Zacharias
(Luke 1:13 ““ what the angel had told Zacharias when he served in the temple). Their child”™s name was to be John. Although Zacharias had not been able to talk since that time”¦he still communicated through hand signs and writing.
What did Elizabeth do with this information? She followed through in obedience to God”™s word through the angel”™s message to her husband.
What was Elizabeth”™s attitude? She “˜listened”™ to her husband and agreed with him to call this special bundle of joy, John. She had agreed to this even before the baby was conceived. She was a godly wife married to a godly husband.
In today”™s culture, yielding to one”™s husband is looked down upon as “˜a woman”™s right”™ being trampled upon. And this is true even among Christians.
What does God”™s word say to both husband and wife?
(NASB) Ephesians 5:1, 22-25 “THEREFORE BE imitators of God, as beloved children”
22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.
24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself up for her”¦”
A godly marriage is a witness to our culture. We are responsible before God to continue to grow in our relationship with our spouse. This will honor God and His word. Please note that in verse 22, wives are to yield to their husbands as they are to yield to the Lord. Not as doormats but as a witness to God”™s love and goodness.
Elizabeth and Zacharias are godly examples, even today. As Christmas is fast approaching, what better way can we express our love for the Lord Jesus, than to live as godly men and women?
Who will you witness to today through your marriage?
How shall you now pray?
