Witnesses in a court trial give invaluable information to what they have seen in specific instances. Their testimony is valid to what they have previously seen.
When buying a house, when a peace treaty is signed by nations, there are witnesses to the signatures on the contract or the treaty.
Being a witness is a legality that helps a judge and/or a jury, or a nation to make right decisions based on facts.
Boaz had called witnesses to verify the legality of the transfer of property rights to himself (from Naomi’s right of redemption of land and of Ruth’s future first born son).
(NASB) Ruth 4:9 “Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “˜You are witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon.'”
***Boaz stated that the transaction consisted of all land and possessions of Elimelech and his two sons.
Where do you and I go to find out what God’s transaction means to us? What does it include? There is only one place and that place is in the Bible. God’s Word lays the plan, the purpose, and the contract out. We need to read the document for ourselves.
(NASB) Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feetAnd a light to my path.”
***As we grow in our knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, His word becomes more important for us as we make choices ~ as we walk through our days.
(NASB) Ruth 4:10-11a “Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so that the name of the deceased will not be cut off from his brothers or from the court of his birth place; you are witnesses today.’
11 All the people who were in the court, and the elders, said, We are witnesses.’…”
***Boaz claimed his legal right to Ruth.
What is amazing about God’s contract? It is personal, just as Boaz’ contract for Ruth was personal.
What is amazing about God’s contract? It is for posterity, just as Boaz’ contract was for the posterity of the lineage of Elimelech, Chilion and Mahlon.
What is amazing about God’s contract? It is witnessed to by reliable and verifiable witnesses, just as Boaz’ contract was witnessed by many.
Being a witness to God’s contract is to know Jesus Christ as Savior.
