Psalms 139 – A Person of Worth
So many people are struggling because they sense they are not worthy. Many try to be worthy in what they choose to do. No matter how successful they may be, they still do not feel ‘worthy’. Our culture, our peers, our parents, our teachers/professors, our employers; all want us to succeed with excellence in every area of our lives. We strive to be the very best – and many times our best is never ‘good enough’ either in others eyes, or from our own perspective.
What does God say about your worth from His point of view? The Christian clichés tell us that Christ died for us, therefore we are of great worth to God…and that is certainly true. But what about the times we know that, and still do not sense our true worth in the sight of the living God? Explore the following Psalm…just between you and God. Be honest and tell Him just what you think and feel…He will not be surprised!
As you do the following study…think about God’s words, think about God’s viewpoint…as your frame of reference.
Use your Bible and read Psalm 139 through one time.
God’s Perception (understanding) of me.
1. What conclusions had the Psalmist come to in his prayer using verses 1-4?
2. Using Hebrews 4:13, what conclusion do you come to about God’s knowledge of you?
3. What is your prayer to God? (This is the time to speak to Him, He is listening…)
God’s Presence (personally involved) with me.
4. Using verses 5-6, think about God’s knowledge of you…do you come to the same conclusion as the Psalmist? [Write out your prayer to God using these two verses.]
5. According to verse 7-12, where can you go to escape from God?
6. What are God’s promises to you according to verses 10?
God’s Prescience (vision) concerning me.
7. (a) Who does the Psalmist give the credit for your existence in verse 13? (b) How do you respond to God as your Creator?
8. Consider your physical body, its various parts and how they function…the human body is the work of God. Think about the integration to your physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social parts that make you, you.
9. Since God made you, all the parts that make you, you…will you now praise God as the Psalmist did in verses 13-16?
10. Since God has made you as you are, should you not accept His creating you as you are? With honesty…tell God your thoughts (whatever they may be).
11. (a) From verses 17-18, begin to list God’s good thoughts about you and for you. (b) Are verses 17-18 your prayer?
God’s Enemies (adversaries) are mine.
11. Who or what are your enemies?
12. Your sins are God’s enemies as well as yours. Do you hate the things you do wrong? Good, so does God. Until you hate those things that God hates, you will not have an understanding of God’s great mercy and amazing grace in your life. What is your prayer as you think about verses 19-22?
God’s Proven Ways (seek Him) with honesty.
13. Seek God Himself. He knows you inside and out…and He still loves you…He created you as you are.
(a) Use verses 23-24 as your personal prayer to the living God.
(b) Using 1 John 1:5-10, follow God’s instructions…especially note verses 9-10.
(c) Remember, after you confess your sins (being specific), it is God’s faithfulness and righteousness that makes you right with God. Those sins are no longer on you; they were put on Jesus when He was on the cross – you have been freed from the guilt of those sins.
(d) Use Psalm 103:1-5 as your prayer to your Savior and your God!
