A Roman commander is a prime example of being morally upright, even though he probably did not believe in the living God of the Bible.

When a plot to kill his prisoner Paul was brought to his attention, he immediately took action.  (Acts 23:12-22)
He gave orders to two centurions to ready 200 soldiers by 9 pm.  He also ordered seventy horsemen and 200 spearmen along with a horse to ride for Paul.  They traveled by night, going to Felix the governor in Caesarea.

The Roman commander also sent a letter to Felix:
(NIV) Acts 23:26-30 “Claudius Lysias,
To His Excellency, Governor Felix:
Greetings,
27This man was seized by the Jews and they were about to kill him, but I came with my troops and rescued him, for I had learned that he is a Roman citizen.  28I wanted to know why they were accusing him, so I brought him to their Sanhedrin.  29I found that the accusation had to do with questions about their law, but there was no charge against him that deserved death or imprisonment.   30When I was informed of a plot to be carried out against the man, I sent him to you at once.  I also ordered his accusers to present to you their case against him.”

God’s protection of Paul through the Roman commander and soldiers is amazing.  The God of the Holy Bible uses many different people and situations to fulfill His will.

When circumstances and people put pressure on you, where do you turn?  Or I should say, to whom do you turn?  If we look only at the difficult circumstances or people, we can easily be defeated.

Paul knew of a plot against his life by the Jews.  He was a prisoner in the Roman barracks.  Scripture is silent about what he thought during this time.  But we can know that his faith was in the living Lord Jesus.

Faith in Jesus is where we need to look, to depend on, to trust in with confidence and hope.  No matter what is going on in our lives.

The Lord God used a morally upright Roman commander to rescue and keep Paul safe.
How is the Lord God rescuing you and keeping you safe for His will to be fulfilled?

When Paul was taken to Caesarea, he was handed over as a prisoner and put under guard in Herod’s palace (the Praetorium).  The letter from the Roman commander was given to Governor Felix.  (Acts 23:31-33)

(NASB) Acts 23:34-35 “When he (Felix) had read it, he asked from what province he (Paul) was, and when he learned that he was from Cilicia,
35 he said, ‘I will give you a hearing after your accusers arrive also,’…”

A Roman commander and a Roman governor: two men who exhibited morally upright decisions concerning Paul.

Who is God using in your life to fulfill His will?
