Jesus had been on the cross for hours and He had suffered excruciatingly in every way.  Darkness had covered the land for three of those hours.  The extreme loneliness, the isolation, the separation from His Father ~ all contributed to His cry. 

(NASB) Matthew 27:46 “About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?’  that is, ‘MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?’” 

  Never before had Jesus ever been separated from His Father.  Never again will Jesus be separated from His Father.
  Why?  Why was He separated?  Because of my sins, because of your sins.  Our sins were on Him as if they were His sins…and God cannot look on sins, He is God.  He judges sins and Jesus was being judged for your sins and mine.  Separation from His Father was, perhaps, the worst thing that could ever happen to Jesus.  Even worse than the scourging, even worse than the crucifixion and dying…separation.  

  Jesus suffered that separation for you and me.  And these very words were prophesied!
(NASB) Psalm 22:1 “MY GOD, my God, why have You forsaken me?” 

  Think back to the hours before Jesus was arrested, tried, convicted and crucified.  Think back to the Garden of Gethsemane in the early morning hours, when Jesus prayed…alone.  He prayed three separate times and the last two times we know He said the following prayer:
(NASB) Matthew 26:42 “…My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done.” 

  Jesus had made the decision and won the victory on His face in prayer before His Father.  He had to go through the agony in order to obtain the glory of victory.  After Jesus died, on the third day He came back to life (resurrected)…He had secured the acceptance of God for all who will place their faith in what He has done on the cross.   

  The cry of Jesus “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” was for you and me.  The unforgiveable sin is to ignore, reject and not believe in Jesus the Savior and Redeemer.  He came to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21).
