Notice that the pretense of flattery was used to set Jesus up:
(NIV) Luke 20:20-21 “Keeping a close watch on him (Jesus), they sent spies, who pretended to be honest.  They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.  21So the spies questioned him: ‘Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.”

What stands out about the setup for trapping Jesus?  It was all true!
Jesus was the Teacher.  (He continues to be the Teacher.)
He did speak and teach correctly. (He still does.)
He was not partial to anyone. (He still isn’t!)
He did teach the way of God in truth.  (He continues to do just that, are you listening?)
All of this is true today as it was then.

  The question sets the trap:
(NIV) Luke 20:22 “‘Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’”

How did Jesus answer even though He saw through their trickery, their duplicity, their cunning and unscrupulousness?  (Luke 20:23)
(NIV) Luke 20:24-25 “‘Show me a denarius.  Whose portrait and inscription are on it?’
25‘Caesar’s,’ they replied.
He said to them, ‘Then give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.’”

What silences our enemies?  God’s words and logic – not yours or mine.  What if we don’t know God’s word well enough to do that?  We can search the Scriptures for God’s answers.
(NIV) Luke 20:26 “They were unable to trap him (Jesus) in what he had said there in public.  And astonished by his answer, they became silent.”

The trap was set but it didn’t ‘trap’ Jesus.
Jesus understands the hidden agendas and motives of those who are against God and His purposes.

We can trust Him for the answers when we are perplexed, in a corner with nowhere to go.  We can go to Jesus.  The trap may be set against us, but our God can spring it!
