(NASB) Luke 20:19-21 “The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them.
20 So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could deliver Him to the rule and the authority of the governor.
21 They questioned Him, saying, ‘Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth.”

Jesus had told a parable aimed at them (Luke 20:9-16).
The scribes and chief priests feared the people.  They understood that the parable was against them — so they watched Him to “catch” Him in some statement — so they could take Him to Governor Pilate for the death sentence.

They flattered Him, they “buttered Him up” by calling Him the respectful name of “Teacher”.  They “played up” to Him with words of acclamation.
It is interesting to note that everything they said to Jesus was true!

  Jesus is the ultimate Teacher.
He speaks only truth and teaches correctly.
He is not partial to anyone ~ everyone has the same recognition before Him.
He teaches the way of God in truth ~ as you read God’s words, they speak only truth.  Do you believe God?

These men asked a question, the first one to try and trip Him up:
(NASB) Luke 20:22 “Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar?”

The second question in trying to trick Jesus:
(NASB) Luke 20:33 “In the resurrection therefore, which one’s wife will she be?  For all seven had married her.”
Jesus’ answers will be in the coming devotionals.

To what do you succumb?  Jesus never let flattery or trickery entrap Him.  In fact, it is impossible to entrap the living God.
Do you “roll over and play dead” by listening to flattery and trickery of words and innuendos?
Today, do not walk into the trap of self.
Today, let’s keep our eyes on the living God and the truth of His word.
