Red Letter Day

Christ

The dictionary defines Christ: 1. The Anointed; the Messiah, as foretold by the prophets of the Old Testament.

From Latin: Christus; from Greek: Christos – the Anointed One, Messiah

“Christ” is the name used of Jesus of Nazareth in the New Testament and “Messiah” is referred to in the Old Testament…which means ‘anointed’ in Hebrew.

In the Near East in ancient times…priests, prophets and kings were set apart when they were anointed with oil for their high offices.  [Jesus the Christ is the Priest and the coming King, Who will fulfill these offices perfectly.]

When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist:
(NASB) Mark 1:10-11 “Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him;
11 and a voice came out of the heavens: ‘You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”

When Jesus later declared His ministry in His hometown of Nazareth He quoted from the prophet Isaiah:

(NASB) Luke 4:18

“THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME,

BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR.

HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES,

AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND,

TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED

19 TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.”

(Underlining added)

The Christ is the Anointed One by God Himself…only Jesus fulfills prophecy…of being the Chosen One before creation of the world by God.
(NASB) 1 Peter 1:20 “For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you
21 who through  Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.”

Christ is the Anointed One of God!

In whom is your faith and hope?

Prayer is a wonderful way to acknowledge

the Christ, Messiah, the Anointed One.
